WEATHER DIARIES exhibition
During DESIGN WEEK LITHUANIA festival, an international exhibition WEATHER DIARIES will be open at the Museum of Applied Arts and Design in Vilnius.
In this exhibition, artists and curators Sarah Cooper (b. 1974, USA) and Nina Gorfer (b. 1979, Austria) explore the driving forces of creativity on the fashion scene in Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Over two years the artist duo have collected stories among local designers and artisans, whose artistic expression has been shaped by the cultures, traditions and surroundings of the islands. Common to the three nations is their isolation, limited resources and the wild, unpredictable weather. This breeds a roughness and fearlessness – and a desire to create.
The artists transform their impressions from the journey into photographs that are neatly staged and massively adapted. Picturesque hybrid images interpret present-day North Atlantic identities by effortlessly crossing genres from centuries of visual culture. Layer upon layer of structures, symbolism and narrative blur the realism of the photographs and add magic. The result is a fabulous record of a journey to places where the weather moulds the people.
