DESIGN WEEK LITHUANIA: Šiauliai

In Šiauliai city festival DESIGN WEEK LITHUANIA took place for the third time already. The theme of the year „Connections“ was represented by promoting collaboration between design and industry sectors.

One of the most important events of the festival in Šiauliai was creative workshop „Industry trash – the ideas of unusual design for Šiauliai city“,  initiated by the local coordinators of the festival – Lithuanian design house wãpsva | LT. Every day we face our wastage. Industry waste age is one of the most important topics today. April 15 wãpsva | LT presented a conference which served as an introduction to this workshop during which city designers tried to release wastage of industry to a new life. After the event all the created art work was exhibited in the museum of Photography and was available to buy in virtual auction.

Various pieces of furniture, lamps or textile objects were created out of industry waste by the best designers, artists and architects of the city. Passers-by also had a chance to watch how the new items are made. During the workshop architect Rasa Pumputienė created dog’s cabin from textile pieces, designers Martynas Olšauskas and Darius Linkevičius created two huge lamps. Part of materials used during the workshop was provided by local industry companies.

What is more, comic art exhibition was held in Šiauliai city, as well as workshops of floral sculptures and stamping, conference for students „Animation – it’s more than just Disney“. Home ideas centre NIC organised more than 10 open events, exhibitions and discussions on the topics of interior design. wãpsva | LT  design house organised various workshops as well as social event Like a fish in the sea.

During the festival the windows of shops and restaurants located in the main streets of the city became an exposition place for young designers. Passers-by had a chance to check latest collections of clothing designers Ramunė Šermūkšnienė and Ramutė Stakėnienė, new chair model by Dalius Puzinas, works of students of Šiauliai Art School and other objects.

Special DESIGN WEEK LITHUANIA menu was also available at more than 10 cafes and restaurants.

The closing evening of the festival took place on the rooftop of the museum of Photography – a huge terrace turned into a catwalk for a modern fashion show which was followed by the performance of MaNNazz music band.
